60 years of a solidarity and humanist Revolution

(I)

Sixty years of revolution and development, of unity of the historical revolutionary leadership with the people to accomplish the tasks of the democratic national revolution on the path of social justice and socialism.

Great class transformations, socio-political, intellectual, cultural and ideological changes in which prevails a great freedom of the mind through the practical, creative implementation instead of the mechanical application and transfer of the experiences of 20th-century revolutions, taking into account the Cuban particularities to understand the lessons and experiences of the revolutions of Cuba and Latin America, and the experience and ideas of José Martí, the great patriot and revolutionary, to “build the state of the new society and the society of the new state”.

The new Cuba, headed by Fidel Castro and his comrades of the M-26-7 revolution, toppled the Batista dictatorship, formed by the Alliance of the state of the old and new military bureaucracy, of the big landowners and the comprador and parasitic bourgeoisie. They founded the state of the new society, the society of workers, peasants, poor people and the lower strata of the petty bourgeoisie. The society of the Alliance of the historical class mass interested in the achievement of the tasks of the Democratic National Revolution with the specific particularities of Cuba. The revolution accomplished its law of justice and of the people of the popular historical block and opened the way for the liquidation of the Alliance of the counter-revolutionary forces that were against the 26 of July Movement, M-26-7, and started the process of accumulation in the construction of the state, of society and of the state complex.

Based on these transformations of a class, regional and political nature, the Revolution was constructed, together with the historical front for the defense of the Cuban people and citizens, on an internal as well as regional plane vis-à-vis harassment and aggression coming from the big neighbor to the north, US imperialism, as well as the dictatorial regimes of the big proprietors, compradors and rightwing, reactionary and militaristic bureaucracies in Latin, Central America and the Caribbean.

The Revolution liberated Cuba. The dictatorship, formed by the alliance of the counter-revolutionary forces, succumbed. Almost one million of its sons abandoned Cuba, among them doctors, engineers, teachers, etc., and they concentrated in the state of Florida, in the US, becoming the spine of the rightwing counter-revolution. It counted on the hosting, financing and protection of the US administration, the northern neighbor only 90 miles away from the Cuban coast, the island of the revolution and freedom and social justice, citizens’ equality and gender equality, the liberation of peasants from the fangs of the big landowners; workers and the urban poor were liberated from the comprador and parasitic bourgeoisie, and the predomination of the reactionary church; the old state was dismantled and freed from its tentacles and the bureaucratic administrative and military mechanisms to deactivate the internal forces contrary to the revolution.

The new state of the revolution began to build the society of “social welfare” and of “human resources” on the basis of putting science and knowledge at the service of the people, eradicating illiteracy, poverty and sickness, achievements recognized by the reports of the United Nations. Cuba has achieved the most outstanding educational and health systems of the whole of Latin America and the Caribbean. Life expectancy of a Cuban citizen is longer than what is registered in the northern neighbor, the United States, the richest and most powerful country of the world. Revolutionary Cuba has contributed “human wealth”: doctors, engineers, scientists, universities for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, for Third World peoples in the Third World, in Africa and Asia, and for national liberation revolutions. Cuba provided them with a great contribution and a national and international revolutionary experience, to save themselves from the old and the new colonialism, and in the struggle to save themselves from imperialism and to achieve social justice and citizens’ equality in Third World countries, and firstly in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. Cuban support reached many Arab peoples, among them our Palestinian revolution and the rights of our people to self-determination and independence and the return of refugees in accordance with UN resolutions and international law.

This was achieved under Cuban skies, by means of the unity of the social-historical block that carried out, promoted and protected the tasks of the new radical national democratic revolution, socialist transformations while constructing unity among the class components, the revolutionary, leftwing and communist patriotic currents led by the M-26-7 and the great revolutionary, national and internationalist leader, Fidel Castro, and his comrades. And to crown this project, the Cuban Communist Party was built, united and on the basis of respect for Cuban and Latin-American peculiarities.

(II)

The Battle of Girón, the ¨Bay of Pigs¨, in 1961 was the great decisive battle vis-à-vis the alliance of counter-revolutionary forces, of rightwing and reactionary Cuban forces and the upper North American imperialist circles that mobilized their potentials and resources in Florida, counting on financing from ruling circles of North-American imperialism to invade and occupy a portion of Cuban territory and to turn it into a beach-head to deal a blow on the Cuban revolutionary leadership.

The outcome was a resounding defeat of the invaders in the Battle of Giron and a resounding triumph of the revolution personally led by Fidel Castro.

Immediately after the victory, Fidel Castro personally declared the commitment “of the people and the revolution with socialism.”

The US administration declared a total sea and air blockade against Cuba. On the other hand, Latin-American dictatorships declared a blockade and the severing of relations with Cuba –with the exception of Mexico.

The Battle of Iron and the Declaration of the Cuban Revolution with respect to a “commitment with socialist transformation” meant a step towards a new stage in the course de the revolution and the people.

The new phase opened up the international space with Cuba and there were relations and alliances with the three universal components: the field of experiences of socialist countries: the movements of national liberation on the three continents –Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean—, workers’, students’ and women’s movements in Europe and North America, towards independence, human rights, peace and development, and progress.

Cuba has provided its universities, sending over half a million of its militant offsprings to collaborate during decades at the service of the rights of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, the Arab countries, and the Palestinian people and revolution.

Owing to the above-mentioned factors and levers, revolutionary Cuba became an international and internationalist beacon, even a universal human phenomenon, by erecting a state and a society that provides care and social justice, on the road of socialism towards the construction of the coming future, “the state and society of social welfare.”

It remained firm, resisting until breaking down the blockade of US imperialism and its lackeys; it remained firm and patient in a noble and revolutionary way for decades, in internal scenarios and its regional environment that took the task of toppling rightwing and reactionary dictatorships in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, pursuing changes towards the left, towards freedom, social justice and citizens’ equality (Brazil, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Nicaragua, El Salvador…), examples that contributed to breaking down the embargo on Cuba, and Cuba and its radical leftwing leadership achieved the merit of being "The Global Platform", as I mentioned in my book The revolutionary Left. The Vision of the Great Awakening (Criticisms and expectations), Caracas, 2012.

(III)

Revolutionary Cuba, led by Fidel Castro, the great patriot and internationalist leader and his comrades, launched socialist transformations from principles and with the revolutionary eagerness of the task of building the socialist economy of social justice, citizens’ equality. The leftwing leadership adopted the lessons and achievements of the stage of the democratic and national revolution, and the construction of economic relations and extensive alliances with the experiences of the socialist-style countries (The Soviet Union, China, Western and Central Europe) represented almost 80% of the total economic relations of Cuba and under a regime of equality, of social and citizens’ justice; as if Cuba were on the upper stage of the construction of socialism.

The collapse of the experience of the Soviet Union, as well as that of Central and Eastern Europe left the Cuban economy devoid of coverage vis-à-vis de loss of 80% of its economic relations. The Cuban economy thus entered into a complex and difficult period (the Special Period), with important and negative sequels for the course of the Cuban economy, and long years of uncertainty that harassed the economic and social life of the country.

The Cuban economy required an exhaustive revision on the basis of the first stage of socialist and social construction, the phase of “everything according to its capacity and everything according to its work”, not in the stage of “equality in care and universal social justice.”

The economic chain is the weak chain among the achievements of the revolution on the stage of the national democratic and radical revolution, while being the chain of weakness of the first phase of socialist transformation and construction. This is the stage of “everything according to its capacity and everything according to its work” under the umbrella of the state of social care and justice.

(IV)

The path and role of revolutionary Cuba, fair and socialist, is the factor that gave reason to Cuba of being considered “the lighthouse”, “the sublime umbrella”, the humanitarian phenomenon vis-à-vis its people and the peoples of the world.

All the supports of the revolution in the course of the 60 years of its triumph and the solution of economic problems in its new trajectory towards the economy of “to each, according to his/her work” and “the state of care and social justice” enter into a stage of knowledge and the application of the products of the industrial and technological revolution which vastly invade our contemporary world.

All of these are pillars of the great role at present and in the prosperous future, at the national as well as international level, of the Cuba of the welfare revolution, social justice and socialism with Cuban peculiarities that have emerged during the 60 years of the revolution that again appears.

(V)

Throughout the 60 years of the Cuban revolution, we have built together the revolutionary Cuban-Palestinian relations.

I have had the historical opportunity of being the first Palestinian (and possibly Arab and Middle-Eastern) leader to meet with comrade and friend Fidel Castro, the great national and internationalist leader, since 1972. What made us coincide was the “New Revolutionary National and Internationalist Vision” in line with the new Cuban and Palestinian peculiarities in search of a new world; the world of freedom and self-determination and independence of peoples, the world of social justice and socialism, the world for which the pioneers of the new socialism pleaded and Marx’s famous equation “socialism of democracy and democracy of socialism”.

During the 50 years of contemporary revolution, the Palestinian people have been struggling for their right to exist on their own land, for self-determination, Independence and the return of refugees. Within this context, the Palestinian revolution was initiated and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine emerged, the new armed Palestinian left with the motto “Politics of weapons and the weapon of politics”.

Cuba, Fidel and his comrades opened the universities of Cuba to train Palestinian cadres irrespective of their intellectual or political leanings.

Cuba, Fidel were the first to break bonds with the Israeli state of colonialist occupation in Palestine and in the neighboring Arab countries in 1973.

Glory to Cuba, to the Revolution, to comrade and friend Fidel Castro, to Raul and his comrades.
