When the Popular Resistance Wins
By: Mohammad Al-Sahli
August 8, 2017

The Palestinian overwhelming anger has forced the occupation government to withdraw from all security measures that were taken in Al-Aqsa Mosque and its environs.

As the battle has been broken out against occupation because of these measures, it can be said that the Palestinian victory was complete according to goals and demands that have been achieved. For these reasons, it can also be said that Netanyahu and his government have been suffered from a crushing defeat by Jerusalemites and who supported them.

Although that any confrontation with the occupation, is already an inseparable from the path of Palestinian general struggle, in order to embody the national rights, but this battle took place under conditions and factors that contributed to achieve the Palestinian demands at a record speed.

Some of these factors are related to Jerusalem, being under the exclusive control of occupation, and other basic factors are related to the availability of local leaders and their abilities to manage the battle until its perfect end.

The Jerusalemites, along with the general public of Palestinian people, have realized that the Israeli measures, were not an improvised response to the operation that was carried out in Jerusalem, and not just field actions as a result of an emergency event that surprised the occupation. It is a project that Tel Aviv has sought to implement, by controlling over Al-Aqsa Mosque and its environs, and passing plan of dividing it spatially and temporally, in compensation for its failed attempt in this way in 2015.

This unified understanding has been reflected through a unity in the field of confrontation, starting with the categorical refusal to adapt with these measures or to seek for compromises. Therefore, the confrontation would have continued as these procedures continued and worsened with all local, regional and international implications.

The issue is momentous in conscientious and national meaning, and ignoring it by those who are related to it, is not as easy as other issues. However, the mediations that have been made as compromises, did not succeed, because the leaders who have been involved in the battle management, refused even to talk about them, and on the battlefield, the influence was only to the occupation and those who stood in the way of its actions.

The battle of Jerusalem has again proved the usefulness of popular resistance and its ability to be steadfast, especially since it is free from pressure and interferences by parties that have always prepared to carry out bargains and procrastinations in various issues over the past stage. This has delayed everything related, in terms of developing means and frameworks to confront the occupation and strengthening the sources of strength of Palestinian situation; those parties, and any way, have been excluded in terms of politics and security from occupied Jerusalem; and there is no security or political possibility for them to intervene. Noting that the figures and symbols attributed to them, did not enter the front line or even field solidarity with rebels.

In the battle of Jerusalem, it is remarkable that the state of Palestinian division has never been reflected in its course, and the field unity of rebels enabled it to achieve its objectives.

However, the victory in this battle does not mean, that the occupation has withdrawn with its electronic equipment and smart cameras, which it removed them out of the battlefield and was forced to accept, the return of situation in Al-Aqsa Mosque and its surroundings to what it was, before the 14th of last month.

Despite Netanyahu's deep sense of defeat, he and his government are vigorously seeking to evacuate Jerusalem from its owners and bring more settlers to it, to make it a Jewish city without Jerusalemites and achieve their plan that aims to make Jerusalem as "a united and eternal capital of Israel". Therefore, the initiatives and bills in Knesset and political contacts are active, in order to achieve this. The Netanyahu government is seeking to displace Palestinians in the 1948 territories and to evacuate Jerusalem from its population in two complementary paths. That means, moving from the demand of Palestinian negotiator to recognize the Jewishness of State of Israel and the recognition of unified Jerusalem as its capital, to apply this demographically on the ground.

This does not mean, that the plan of ethnic cleansing, which Tel Aviv is seeking to achieve, is going ahead to its targets that have been set by Israeli government, but putting an end to this project, requires much of the Palestinian national effort according to a unified program, that puts an end to the Palestinian official policies, which still run after the settlement according to Tel Aviv's terms and the previous and present Washington's instructions.

The battle of Jerusalem has put pressure on all parties and placed them before entitlements that have been shirked from by them for a long time. Including the announcement by Palestinian official leadership, to freeze contacts with occupation, but this was temporary, until it retracts its actions. The security coordination will then be re-activated by the end of battle, and perhaps the same regarding announcement of decision to submit complaints against the crimes of occupation to International Criminal Court.

What has been ignored is that the Palestinian Central Council made clear and binding decisions before the battle of Jerusalem more than two years ago. It called for a halting the security coordination with occupation and to activate the membership of State of Palestine in international institutions, especially International Criminal Court. it also decided to correct the entire political process regarding the settlement in order to approve it in accordance with the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy, and primarily Resolution 194, which guarantees to Palestinian refugees, their right to return to their homes and properties from which they have been expelled, and to eliminate the bargains, including the principle of land exchange in delineating the borders of Palestinian state, with stressing on the need to establish it, on the lines of fourth of June 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.

There is no need for a new position or resolution to be announced from this platform or that, about what is taking place in the battle of Jerusalem, but the real need is the initiate implementation of resolutions of national consensus. The same applies to the issue of division and the need to return to resolutions of comprehensive national dialogues in this regard. However, a unified political will is needed, to bring the Palestinian situation out of the existing situation of paralysis to situation of initiative and action.

So far, there are no serious indications of availability of this will, at the same time in which the occupation is preparing for a new round of aggression in another attempt to achieve what has been unable to in the previous one.
